Spirometry is a quick and simple test that, when performed correctly, can reveal whether airflow out of the lungs is obstructed. The patient first fills the lungs completely and then exhales with maximum force until the lungs are fully emptied. In cases of airway obstruction, it takes longer to expel the air.
